HMS Glasgow (D88) 'Type 42" Batch 1 Destroyer and HMS Brilliant (F90) "Type 22" Batch 1 Frigate operating together near the Falkland Islands as the "Type 64 Combo" in the early May 1982. | |||
HMS Glasgow (D88) is converted from a Shanghai/Dragon DML 'Exeter' Class Type 42 Batch 2 kit. 4.5-in gun turret and Seadart surface-to-air missile is turned towards quarter starboard. Above the bridge is the flag of United Kingdom, while RN's White Ensign flies on the main mast. Pennant number on the sides are painted out, while there is black vertical band running from the top of the funnel to the black booty line. WEM Photo-Etch 1/700 for Type 42 was applied ‘judisciously’ or ‘conveniently’. Fit is circa Falklands 1982. HMS Brilliant (F90) is also a conversion from HMS Brazen WEM resin kit (a succeeding Type 22 FF sister ship). Photo-etched on the main mast and secondary mast are also from WEM+ Fit is circa Falklands 1982. Note the number “2” on the funnel, as it represents that it belongs to 2nd Frigate Sqn. SCOT radome is also absent as it was yet to be fitted when she was called to action. The Brilliant kit was a little bit rough, since it was yet part of the ‘older’ 1st-generation kit of White Ensign Models (WEM). (Their kits have improved many times since then). A lot of putty and sanding was done. For the sea diorama, I used a ¾” styrofoam base, which I wrapped with a thin blue cellophane. To fix the cellophane, I used greenish blue latex paint as ‘adhesive’. This also provide the contrast color. For the wakes, I used ‘guitar-brand’ acryllic gel. For final touch, I air-sprayed the correct colors (dark sea blue, white) on it, before attaching the ships. These are my 4th-7th models, and my worksmanship is still below desirable. I work in batches of kits to save on spray painting :). |
